Choir Chairman, Tony Young, presented his sixth annual report and remarked that even though choir membership is rather low, he still remains a non-singing Chairman.
The statistics for the past year, 1st July 2017 to 30th June 2018 are as follows:-
The choir fulfilled 13 engagements during the year, 2 more than last year, but sadly 3 of the engagements were for funerals.
There were 2 social events during the year, an open day at the home of Frank Smith and the Annual Dinner held at Nelson Golf Club in September.
The Choir Committee met on 7 occasions during the year.
The choir currently have 30 members plus Julie and John, comprising 8 First Tenors, 9 Second Tenors, 5 Baritones and 8 Basses.
The choir rehearsed 38 times in the year. Average attendance was 77.25% (81.80% previous year)
Four long serving former members died last year: John Thornton, Ben Clarkson, Peter Ogden and Derek Burnett.
The Chairman thanked all who had contributed to the smooth running of the choir, choir officers and committee members and also thanked Higherford Methodist Church for providing rehearsal facilities.
The choir patrons were also thanked for their support, both financial and as part of our audience.
On the musical side, many thanks to Julie, our Musical Director who has now settled into her role and keeps the choir on their toes. Thanks also to John Taylor our Accompanist and Deputy Conductor and to Chris Dennis our Deputy accompanist. Lastly, thanks to all choir members for their contining commitment to the Choir.
'I mention most years that the membership situation isn't getting much better, and it's no different this year. There is, of coursr, no easy answer to this problem as most organisations (not just Male Voice Choirs)have major difficulties in recruiting new blood. Let us hope that we see some improvrment this year.
That now concludes my report and I hope that you will all enjoy your singing durin the coming year and continue to provide the wonderful music to which we have become accustomed.'
